Stories and insights from the Co-Founder & CEO of Evenbase
Well, we have travelled nearly 250 miles on my first (yes first) ocean passage. We left in almighty waves with wind of 20 to 30 knots. We didn't get much sleep but managed to grab an hour here or there (much of the time sleeping in the cockpit). It was fantastic to spot land about 60 miles out and slowly but surely today we have been reining the island in. We are currently about 8 miles from the port where we will meet my best friend who will be joining us on our onward journey.
Ok, the sun is out and the gales have gone but we still have high seas. Today we set sail on the leg from Madeira to La Palma. We are racing against time to beat massive high waves which are fast approaching the Canaries. This stretch is 300 miles and will take around 40 hours. The sea is going to be fairly nasty all the way with waves up to 5 metres. Very exciting stuff.
Madeira: Waiting for storms to pass before making the two day crossing to the Canaries (take a look at those clouds). The rain lashed down on us last night in a force 6 to 8 gale!!
To add to the problems, our Atlantic trip from the Canaries to St Lucia looks seriously threatened by becalmed seas. The tradewinds don't look like they are behaving this year. Will 6 months of prep come to nothing? Coming in to Madeira (from Lagos, Portugal) my boat, Reunion, had to endure 45ft waves with serious risk of pitch poling. Global warming seems to be affecting normal weather patterns.
